Day 13, Sydney, Australia, February 14, 2009

What has come out of the fires in Victoria is that because of the success of the Greens stopping prescribed burning of underbrush, the fires were super-fueled.  I remember a comment that George Strombalopolis made on his show The Hour, disparaging the Prime Minister of Australia for this practice.

Something I have not been able to share with you is the scents of the vegetation. It is everywhere in Sydney and accentuated after a rain shower.  With all of the exotic plants and trees that surround most homes, the scents are wonderful.  When we were tramping down to Middle Harbour we could smell Lemon Myrtle mixed with all of the earthy scents of the neighborhood.  Someday some of you may make it to Australia and experience what I have not been able to share with you.

The shark attacks were in the news today.  It seems the clean harbour water has encouraged an abundance of bait fish which brings in the Kingfish that feed on them.  This in turn brings in the sharks that relish Kingfish as much as the casual fisherman.  Commercial fishing in the harbour has been banned for some time.
